If you’re just starting out, RubyMine might help you understand the Ruby/Rails development workflow. IntelliJ saved my sanity for the (thankfully, brief) time I had to do Java development. I’ve been using that for about 10 years now.Ī lot of people mention RubyMine. Then I discovered Sublime, which, out of the box, looked and worked like I was trying to get vim to. Since I grew up on vi, I had a heavily-customized vim setup. I’ve been doing Rails almost since the beginning. Stuff like source lookup - you can totally do it with ctags or something, but it’s far beyond a beginner setting up their vim/emacs. Like, rubymine does a lot of stuff out of the box which is kinda tricky to customize your editor to do. At the end of the day, all that matters is what you enjoy using and what helps you be productive. So, it’s not the “only real choice”, it’s a matter of opinion. I find RubyMine to be bloated and I prefer vscode to it (as does the rest of my team).

With that said, RubyMine is a very natural first option to explore. IntellIJ by JetBrains is also a heavy hitter, consistently being in the conversation for best IDE for multiple languages.
